Best EV chargers in Australia (2026 buyer's guide)
A practical comparison of the home EV chargers most commonly installed in Australia — power, features, price range and who each one suits.

There's no single 'best' home charger — the right one depends on your car, your switchboard and how much you value app features versus simplicity. On the Gold Coast two local factors also come into it: whether the unit will sit in an exposed coastal carport or a sheltered garage, and whether you have rooftop solar the charger should work with. This guide compares the units we install most often here.
What actually matters when choosing a charger
Every compliant AC charger sold in Australia will safely charge your car. The differences that matter are power rating, physical size, app quality, and whether it supports load management or solar diversion.
- Power rating — 7kW (single phase) or up to 22kW (three phase)
- Tethered cable vs socketed (bring-your-own cable)
- App scheduling, tariff awareness and OCPP support
- Physical footprint, especially in tight garages
- Compatibility with dynamic load management and solar diversion
The main contenders
Tesla Wall Connector — the cleanest, simplest option. Works with any Type 2 EV, not just Teslas, and supports power sharing across multiple units on one circuit.
Wallbox Pulsar Plus — one of the smallest chargers available, with a well-regarded app and optional built-in power meter.
Ocular — an Australian-designed charger with strong local support and a compact, weatherproof build.
Zappi (myenergi) — the standout choice where solar diversion is the priority, with dedicated surplus-only charging modes.
Fronius Wattpilot — the natural fit if you already have a Fronius solar inverter, integrating without extra CT clamp hardware.
Price expectations
Hardware and installation pricing varies with charger brand, cable run length, whether a switchboard upgrade is needed, and single versus three phase wiring. Rather than quote a figure that's wrong within a year, we provide fixed-price quotes after a quick look at your switchboard and parking — usually from a few photos.
How to shortlist in five minutes
Answer these questions before you start comparing chargers:
- Is your supply single phase or three phase?
- Do you want the charger to talk to your solar system?
- Will a second EV be added to the household later?
- Is your garage tight on wall space?
- Do you want the charger visible from the street, or tucked away?
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a 22kW charger?
Only if your car's onboard AC charger can use it (commonly up to 11kW or 22kW on three phase) and you have a three phase supply. Most single-phase homes are limited to 7.4kW regardless of the charger's rating.
Is a tethered cable better than a socketed charger?
Tethered is more convenient day to day. Socketed chargers let you use your own cable and can look tidier, but you need to store a cable in the car.
Can I install the charger myself?
No — home EV charger circuits must be installed and certified by a licensed electrician to AS/NZS 3000.
Does a coastal location change which charger I should pick?
It can. If the unit will live in an open carport or on an exposed wall near the water, prioritise outdoor rating and enclosure quality over app features, and plan a sheltered mounting position. Inside a garage, exposure is much less of a factor.
Should I choose a solar-aware charger on the Gold Coast?
It's worth considering if you already have rooftop solar and the car is home during the day. If the car is only ever charged overnight, a simpler scheduled charger on a cheaper overnight window may suit you better.
